“It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God – that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.”1 Corinthians 1:30
This verse is so cool. It’s like a Gospel snapshot and a love and hope-filled statement.
It says that God loved the world so much and knew our propensity toward sin, so He came up with a plan to save us from our deserved death and destruction. God saw the entirety of Man’s life on Earth and knew we would be sinful and need a more lasting redemption than the blood of innocent animals. I mean, let’s face it – if we still had to kill an animal for every sin we’ve ever committed, I alone would likely be responsible for the extinction of all the lambs and goats (at least in California).
There would be no animals left if we had to do it that way. The Lord knew that, so He gave us a scapegoat – a holy and blameless sacrifice once for all through Christ, our Living Redeemer. It is because of God that we have even the possibility of life in heaven after death. He did that. If nothing else in this life gives you hope or peace or joy, get it from knowing God loved you enough to give up His Son for you.
The verse also tells us in a roundabout way that Jesus is wisdom from God. Think about it: wisdom from above is pure, peaceable, gentle, reasonable, merciful, fruitful, impartial and sincere (James 3:17). The first verse is an even more concise, yet all-inclusive definition of Christ as wisdom. Christ is our righteousness, our holiness and our redemption. Therefore, Christ is wisdom.
There is yet another secret in the midst of this verse. I may be reaching here, but, in the verse there is an Oxford comma missing. Because of the missing Oxford comma, we can assume holiness and redemption are intertwined/undivided. Holiness and redemption are cause and effect, forward and backward. In other words, without a holy Messiah, there would be no redemption. Without redemption, we don’t find holiness. At heart, humans are desperately wicked and deceitful. We can’t be holy. Without the love of God through Christ (His death and resurrection), we would be destined for hell and deserving of such a punishment. Praise God for His plan of redemption. Life is truly worth the living, just because He lives!
I say all of that to say this: Jesus is love. He is wisdom. He is everything we ever need in this life and the next. No matter what you’re going through, whether you have unanswered prayers or things going on that are out of your control, and even if you are in a good place, fall on your knees in fear of the Lord. Let the awe of knowing Him and His great love for you flood your heart. Make room for the Spirit to show you the areas where you are missing the fear of the Lord. Submit those areas to Him and accept wisdom. Allow Christ to fill every part of you and lead you in righteousness and holiness toward the prize of redemption each and every day.
Prayer: God, thank You for creating a plan to save me through Your Son Jesus. I am in awe of Your genius, Your immeasurable love, and the wisdom that is Christ. Help me to fully understand the sacrifice that was made so I could have life and freedom, and an eternity with You. Help me never to forget the righteousness, holiness and redemption that comes from Christ. Teach me to always fear the possibility of my life without Jesus, and help me to live according to that fear. Forgive me for not giving You all of me and help me to see where I haven’t let You in yet. I love You and want to be more like You. Thank You for giving me wisdom. Thank you for giving me Jesus. Amen.
