“Look! Here come the sifters!”
I had a dream this morning where someone unknown to me stood beside me and said those words, pointing in the distance. I woke up wondering what it meant.
This is what I know: We’ve been going through some things individually and corporately, and have felt the beating of our threshing. The uncomfortable and sometimes painful separation of the chaff has been difficult as we began the season of threshing seven months ago.
Now, I believe we are in a season of sifting. One definition for sifting is this:
“To make a close examination of all the parts of something in order to find something or to separate what is useful from what is not.”Cambridge Dictionary
That both encourages and scares me at the same time. It is encouraging because it means we will be closely examined. Remember when David prayed for God to test him and see if there was any wicked way in him? That’s what I think of when sifting is occurring in the church. It is good because it means we are being further separated from the parts of us that are against Him, yet it can be scary because it means Almighty God is closely examining us. This is not to say He hasn’t been doing this all along, but we are being informed of it which to me means when He’s done with this season of sifting something else is coming.
So, if we’ve been through the threshing, and have seemingly been separated from the chaff, what will the sifting look for?
“They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.”Titus 1:16
The sifting will show the disobedient, detestable, and worthless in us. This is a difficult examination. If we aren’t willing to be examined closely, we will be thrown out with the rest of the chaff. We will be purged.
However, if we are willing to humble ourselves in the sight of God, then He will lift us up. We will be made strong in our faith as we strive for holiness. Then, when we have done all, we will be able to stand.
Whatever the next season is, we need to be ready. Individually and corporately we need to allow ourselves to be sifted. When we are presented with something unlike God as He examines us for worthiness, we must be willing to let go of it and put it to death. All will be exposed. Be ready.
Prayer: God, I am willing to be sifted. I want to be found worthy and useful. Search me and see if there is any wickedness in me. I know there is, but sometimes it’s hard for me to see. Open my eyes so I can purge myself of anything that is not like Christ. Create a healthy fear in me so I don’t turn away when Your discipline comes. Thank You for loving me enough to show me what still needs to be burned away. I choose You. You are all I want. Help me make that true in action. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
