“For where two or three gather in My name, there am I with them.”Matthew 18:20
My daughter was triggered tonight by something and had a slight emotional breakdown because of it. I had no idea she had this trigger and it kind of freaked me out. She explained where it came from and why she felt the way she did and immediately we prayed. I explained to her that I have triggers, too, but when I remember to get Jesus involved, they don’t affect me the way they used to. I wanted to teach her the same thing.
The name of Jesus has such power, but I think we forget sometimes to call on Him and we give in to our feelings. Don’t get me wrong; anxiety is a very real issue. But Jesus is a very real Savior. He can bring freedom to those areas that hold us prisoner to fear.
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”2 Timothy 1:7
I told my daughter this verse and explained that we who have asked Jesus into our hearts, who believe in Him and live for Him have His love to cover us and protect us. We also have His great power inside of us. “Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world,” I told her. The sound mind we get from Him, too. It is His reasonable, rational, peace that guards our hearts and minds when we take our thoughts captive to make them obedient to Him.
While I was teaching her this concept, the atmosphere of the room changed. It was subtle at first, but it felt like the Presence of God was resting in my living room. It was as if He was right there with us, nodding in agreement to His Word being spoken and His name being praised.
This happens in my church a lot, in my quiet time sometimes, and in moments like this one with my daughter. This is the reason why we desperately need His Word. We must feed on His Word in church and on our own daily so we can understand who He is. It gives us a well for His Holy Spirit in us to draw from, and helps us to implement His concepts into our daily lives in a practical way. When we do, He can abide with us and draw near to us, and change the very atmosphere we abide in.
Prayer: Lord, help me to hide Your Word in my heart. Teach me to know You well and to do what You say. Give me opportunities to speak Your truth. Help me learn it for myself, too, so I can live the abundant life You have for me and show others Your life-changing love and power. Abide with me. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
