Takes one to know one

Sometimes I am so high and mighty, I even annoy myself.

Last night I was venting to the Lord about someone. I was reading my Bible and stopped mid-chapter to let God know how I felt. There I was, laying in front of my open Bible, talking to God about how someone frustrated me. I was telling Him what I observed and calling out their supposed character flaws.

You know what He spoke to my heart? It was as if He took several steps back and kinda lobbed this statement to me from afar, “It takes one to know one!” Then He explained, “Do you know why you can tell when someone is lying, engaging in manipulation, or is fake?” Uh, yeah I have discernment right? (Chuckle.)

Almighty God then quotes my favorite verse back to me, “And such were some of you.” (From 1 Corinthians 6) I have never felt so small. And yet, He said it in a loving way, almost laughing. I HAVE been that person at one point in my life and even still I show some of the same character flaws I so quickly pointed out in them.

Note to self: Take plank out of own eye before complaining of speck in others’ eye. Yeah.

1 Thessalonians 5:14 and 2 Timothy 2:24 tell us we must be gentle and patient to ALL men. Ya know that person who just irks you? There’s just something about them that makes you…you don’t even know what it is, but they improve your prayer life by being…them? Sorry, y’all. That whole, ‘love your neighbor’ command is for real. Your attitude, the chip on your shoulder, and your people-frustration needs to be submitted to the Lord.

“Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if anything ye be other minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.”

Philippians 3:15

God is faithful to reveal our shortcomings in perfect timing. We don’t see our thoughts or actions sometimes as wrong. We think we’re okay.

“There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness. There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! And their eyelids are lifted up.”

Proverbs 30:12-13

Sometimes that’s me! I prayed, God convict me of my sin and reveal my pride and lofty eyes so I can repent and You can begin to change my heart!

“If you have done foolishly in lifting up yourself, or if you have thought evil, lay your hand on your mouth.”

Proverbs 30:32

God is not going to shut my mouth for me. Well, He will if necessary, but it is up to me to submit myself to Him. It’s my responsibility to “tame my tongue,” (James 3) as impossible as it can be. But, “with man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26).

Today, if you’re like me and have “people issues”, give them to the Lord. That person who gets on your nerves: pray for them. Pray a blessing over them. And ask God to forgive you and warm your cold heart. I know I am today. May we have compassion for all, live at peace with one another, and have a little grace for God’s children.
