On the Topic of Hell

Let’s talk about Hell for a minute. I’ve had people tell me Hell isn’t real, that nobody gets sent there, or they can be resurrected from there, that God doesn’t send people to Hell because He’s a loving God (He is), and other things. So, I thought it would be time to have a (one-sided) discussion.

Here’s what we know:

  • It’s real
  • You can be sent there
  • There is no escape from it
  • There’s a way to not be sent there

First, let’s discuss what Hell is/what it’s like:

  • Psalm 11:6 – “On the wicked he will rain fiery coals and burning sulfur; a scorching wind will be their lot.”
  • Revelation 14:11a – “The smoke of the fire that torments them will rise forever and ever, and there will be no relief day or night.”
  • Matthew 13:42 – “They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
  • 2 Thess 1:9 – “These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,”
  • Mark 9:48 – “where the worms that eat them do not die, and the fire is not quenched.”
  • Luke 16:24 – “In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame‘.”
  • Luke 16:26 – “And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.”

Now, let’s talk about who gets sent there:

  • Psalm 9:17 – “The wicked go down to the realm of the dead, all the nations that forget God.”
  • Revelation 14:11b – “For those who worship the beast or its image or accept the mark of its name.”
  • 2 Thess 1:8 – “Dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.”
  • John 3:18 – “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”
  • Matthew 13:41 – “The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil.”
  • Matthew 24:51 – “He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
  • In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire
  • Revelation 21:8 – “But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars-they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
  • Revelation 20:15 – “Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.”
  • Galatians 5:19-21 – “Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forwarn you, just as I have forwarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

This is a lot of information, but I think it’s important to consider these things. If Hell and judgment are mentioned this much in the Bible (and these are not the only verses; there are many more), we should pay attention. So many believe there is no Hell, and it’s no wonder when it isn’t hardly mentioned in the church or in society anymore. Hell is real, you can be sent there, and you should be in fear of being sent there.

“Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

Matthew 10:28

There is thankfully a Way to keep from being sent to Hell. His name is Jesus. He died on the cross for the sins of the world and went to Hell for us. Anyone who believes on Him, confessing with their mouth and believing in their heart that He is Lord, will not perish but have everlasting life. Here’s how to get to heaven, who made it possible, how to please the Father, and how to have complete assurance of your salvation:

  • John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
  • Ephesians 2:8-9 – “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
  • Acts 4:12 – “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
  • John 5:24 – “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.”
  • Romans 10:9-10 – “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.”
  • Acts 2:38 – “Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
  • John 14:6 – “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
  • Titus 3:5 – “He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.”
  • Hebrews 7:25 – “Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.”

Can you lose your salvation or walk away from it and go to Hell?

  • Matthew 7:21 – “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”
  • John 15:4 – “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself: it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.”
  • Matthew 5:13 – “You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.”
  • Revelation 3:16 – “So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.
  • 1 Tim 4:1 – “Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teaching of demons
  • 2 Corinthians 13:5 – “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is is in you? – unless indeed you fail to meet the test!

Educate yourself, read the Word, be in repentance every day, be watchful and ready: Jesus is coming.
